Aaben Duo
The saxophone and harp duo community is an exciting up-and-coming genre, which is internationally recognised but also spearheaded by Manchester musicians. As part of the Aaben Duo, established in 2019, Nathan Holroyd and Jess Hughes have given several performances of new and traditional works, including many pieces which they arranged for the duo themselves. Notable performances include their showcase of Andy Scott’s contemporary ‘Sonata’ at the RNCM in 2019; a concert of female composers for International Women’s Day at the Anthony Burgess Foundation in 2022; and several concerts of popular French Classics arranged entirely by the two performers toured around Manchester in 2022.

Tegid Duo
Harp students Jess Hughes and Angharad Huw were mid-way through their second and first years of study at the Royal Northern College of Music when the country had to enter a national lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus. Whilst studying remotely, with Jess in Somerset and Angharad in North Wales, they did some research into lots of different chamber groups and harp duos that inspired them, and decided they would like to form a duo of their own!

Their name, Tegid Duo, is inspired by the legend of Llyn Tegid – the story of how Bala Lake in North Wales was formed, and how a Welsh harpist’s life was spared by the gods, who wanted to punish Bala’s monarch, the greedy King Tegid Foel, for his evil ways.
Since forming in 2020, Tegid Duo has performed around Manchester and beyond, delighting its audiences with its beautiful harp duo repertoire.

Trumpet and Harp Duo
The trumpet and harp make a surprisingly beautiful and complementary instrument combination, blending the bold brilliance of brass with the delicate elegance of strings. Together, they create a unique sonic palette that feels both regal and dreamlike, making them well-suited for contemporary compositions and imaginative classical arrangements.

Since establishing their duo in 2021, during their final year of study at the RNCM, Jess Hughes and Cameron Chin-See have given several performances with this unique instrument pairing. In 2024, they gave a charity recital in Wells, Somerset, raising funds for Young Lives vs Cancer, and were invited to perform at Topsham Music Festival in Devon. They enjoy discovering pieces written for trumpet and harp, as well as creating their own arrangements of popular classical works.
